How to Choose the Right Kitchen Hob (Quick Checklist)

1. Gas or induction? Gas for wok cooking and instant visual heat; induction for speed, efficiency and a cool, easy-clean surface.
2. Count the burners. Two for a small kitchen, three to four for everyday family cooking, five for serious cooks who use several pots at once.
3. Check the cutout. Measure your countertop cutout so the built-in hob fits; confirm gas piping or a power point is in place.

Gas hob or induction hob — which is better?

For Malaysian wok cooking, a gas hob is usually better — open flame, instant heat, and it works with round-bottom woks. Induction is faster, more energy-efficient and cooler to touch, but needs magnetic (flat, iron-based) cookware. Choose gas for traditional cooking, induction for speed and a clean look.

Do induction hobs need special cookware?

Yes. Induction only works with magnetic cookware — typically cast iron, enamel-coated steel, and magnetic stainless steel. Aluminium, copper and glass pans will not heat unless they have a magnetic base. Test a magnet on the bottom of your pots; if it sticks, they will work.

How many burners do I need?

Two burners suit a small household or compact kitchen, three to four cover most everyday family cooking, and five (often with a wok burner) suits keen cooks who run several pots at once. Match the hob size to your counter and your cooking habits.

What is a flame-failure device?

A safety feature on gas hobs that cuts off the gas supply if the flame goes out — for example from a draught or spill. It stops unburned gas building up. We recommend only hobs with flame-failure protection.

Can I use a wok on a gas hob?
